Chafer nematodes (Heterorhabditis bacteriophora) are a natural way to control chafer beetle larvae that feed on grass roots. Chafer grubs weaken lawns, leaving yellow patches and thin grass. Much of the damage you see happens when birds or animals dig up turf looking for grubs. Treating lawns with nematodes for chafer grubs helps stop the infestation and encourages strong, green grass growth.

What Are Chafer Grubs And Why Use Nematodes

Chafer grubs are the larvae of chafer beetles. These white, C-shaped insects with orange heads feed on lawn roots, causing the turf to lift easily. Over time, the problem worsens as beetles return each year to lay more eggs. Applying chafer grub nematodes breaks this cycle by targeting the larvae in the soil.

Identifying Chafer Grubs In Your Lawn

Chafer grubs are easily recognised by their white curved body and orange head. They are often mistaken for leatherjackets, which are brown, legless, and worm-like. Correct identification ensures nematodes for chafer are used for the right pest, giving you the most effective lawn recovery.

Signs Of Chafer Grub Damage To Lawns

Typical signs include yellow or bare patches and turf that lifts without resistance. You may also see birds, foxes, or badgers pulling up the grass in search of grubs. If untreated, more of the lawn becomes damaged. Applying chafer nematodes helps prevent further loss and promotes new root growth.

When To Apply Chafer Nematodes

Apply chafer grub treatment when the larvae are young and close to the surface, mainly from August to October, and again in April or May if needed. The soil should be moist and above 10°C for nematodes to stay active. Avoid application during cold or dry conditions for best results.

How To Apply Nematodes For Chafer Grubs

Chafer nematodes come with clear instructions and can be applied using a watering can with a coarse rose or a nematode applicator. After treatment, keep the soil moist for two weeks so the nematodes can move through the soil and reach the grubs.

Chafer Nematodes Coverage And Pack Sizes

Each pack of chafer nematodes treats up to 100 square metres of lawn. As a live product, it should be used within two weeks of delivery. Orders are non-returnable once dispatched, so plan your application for suitable weather conditions.

How Long Do Chafer Nematodes Take To Work?

You may notice fewer grubs within a few days of application, though visible improvement in grass condition typically takes several weeks as new roots establish.

A chafer grub trap is also available to catch the adults.  We also have a chafer grub blog if you would like to read it.
