Keep your compost heap healthy and free from nuisance flies with our natural Compost Fly Treatment. Using beneficial nematodes, this biological control targets compost fly larvae living within the compost, helping to reduce adult fly populations without the use of chemicals.

Compost flies are commonly found on or near the surface of compost heaps, particularly around damp, fresh kitchen waste. Once applied, the nematodes actively seek out and control the larvae, providing an effective and environmentally friendly solution for compost fly infestations.

Compost Fly Treatment for Compost Heaps and Bins

This easy-to-use treatment contains live beneficial nematodes that naturally target compost fly larvae before they develop into breeding adults. Suitable for use in compost heaps and compost bins, it provides a safe, chemical-free way to manage fly populations while supporting a healthy composting environment.

Why Choose Beneficial Nematodes?

  • Natural biological control for compost fly larvae
  • Chemical-free and environmentally friendly
  • Safe for children, pets, wildlife and beneficial insects
  • Suitable for compost heaps and compost bins
  • Helps break the fly breeding cycle at the source
  • Simple to apply using a watering can or sprayer
  • Treats up to 12m² compost area

How to Control Compost Fly Larvae Naturally

Mix and apply the nematodes evenly over the surface of your compost heap, concentrating on damp areas and fresh organic waste where compost flies are most likely to breed. The beneficial nematodes move through the compost in search of larvae, helping to reduce current populations and prevent future infestations.

For optimum results, apply when temperatures are above 8°C and keep the compost moist for at least three to four weeks after treatment. Heavy infestations may require a follow-up application.

Mixing and Application Instructions

  1. Empty the entire packet into 1.2 litres of water and stir continuously to create a stock solution.
  2. Take 0.6 litres of the stock solution and add it to 5.4 litres of water while stirring.
  3. Transfer the 6-litre solution into a watering can fitted with a coarse rose.
  4. One full watering can treats approximately 6m².
  5. Repeat until all of the stock solution has been used.
  6. Lightly water the treated area after application.

Best Conditions for Successful Treatment

  • Apply when compost temperatures are above 8°C
  • Treat during the evening, on cloudy days or during light rainfall
  • Ensure the compost is moist before application
  • Keep the compost moist for three to four weeks after treatment
  • Avoid overwatering or waterlogging the compost
  • Water immediately after application for best results

Storage and Handling Information

Store the nematodes as soon as possible after delivery. Keep refrigerated or below 5°C until the expiry date shown on the pack. Do not freeze or expose the product to high temperatures. Once mixed with water, use the solution within four hours.

Application Equipment

Apply using a watering can fitted with a coarse 1.4mm rose or a suitable sprayer. If using a sprayer, remove any filters with a mesh finer than 1.4mm and use a maximum pressure of 5 bar through nozzles of at least 0.5mm.

If applying over plants, water within 30 minutes to wash the nematodes from the foliage back into the compost or growing medium where the larvae are present.

Nematode applicators are available separately from our website.

For best results:

  • Apply when compost temperatures are above 8°C
  • Treat during the evening or in overcast conditions
  • Water immediately after application
  • Maintain moisture levels for 3–4 weeks after treatment
  • Repeat treatment if compost fly activity persists
