Chafer nematodes (Heterorhabditis bacteriophora) are a natural method to stop chafer beetle larvae attacking grass roots. Chafer grubs weaken lawns by feeding on the roots, leading to yellow patches and thin grass. Much of the visible lawn damage is caused when birds, foxes, and badgers dig up turf in search of the grubs. Using nematodes for chafer grubs helps restore healthy grass growth.

What Are Chafer Grubs And How Do They Affect Lawns

Chafer grubs are the larval stage of chafer beetles. They are white, C-shaped insects with an orange head and six legs. After hatching, they feed on grass roots, leaving lawns vulnerable and patchy. As the cycle continues each year, the problem becomes more severe unless treated with chafer grub nematodes.

How To Identify Chafer Grubs Compared To Leatherjackets

When checking your lawn, chafer grubs are easily recognised by their white curved body and orange head. Leatherjackets, in contrast, are brown-grey, worm-like, and legless. Identifying which pest is present helps decide whether nematodes for chafer are the correct treatment.

Spotting Chafer Grub Damage To Your Lawn

Damage from chafer grubs appears as yellow patches where the turf lifts easily due to the lack of roots. You may also notice birds and animals digging up areas of the lawn while searching for grubs. If left untreated, the infestation spreads and weakens more of the grass.

When To Apply Chafer Nematodes To Lawns

Chafer nematodes should be applied during the times of year when young larvae are active and close to the soil surface. The most effective period is late summer to early autumn, from August through October. A further treatment can also be applied in spring, during April and May. Soil must be moist, and temperatures should be above 10°C for nematodes to work properly.

How to Apply Chafer Grub Nematodes

The nematodes can be applied with a watering can with a rose with large holes or with a nematode applicator

How To Use Nematodes For Chafer Grubs

The nematodes are supplied with clear instructions and can be applied with a watering can or nematode applicator. After applying, keep the soil moist for at least two weeks to allow the nematodes to move through the soil and target the grubs. They can withstand occasional frosts after application.

Chafer Nematodes Lawn Coverage And Pack Sizes

Each pack of chafer nematodes treats up to 100 square metres of lawn. As they are a live product, they have a short shelf life of around two weeks. Orders are non-returnable, so it is best to plan application when conditions are suitable.

How Long Do Chafer Nematodes Take To Work

Nematodes usually reduce grub numbers within days, though visible improvements to the grass may take several weeks.

Can I Apply Chafer Nematodes In Winter

No, nematodes need soil temperatures above 10°C to be active, so they are not suitable for winter use.

Are Chafer Nematodes Safe For Pets And Wildlife

Yes, chafer nematodes are safe for pets, birds, and other wildlife as they only target chafer grubs.

Do I Need To Reapply Chafer Nematodes Every Year

For ongoing lawn protection, it is recommended to apply chafer nematodes annually during the active periods of larvae.

Can I Mow The Lawn After Applying Chafer Nematodes

Yes, you can mow as usual, but avoid disturbing the soil for at least a week after application.

How Should Chafer Nematodes Be Stored Before Use

Keep them refrigerated and use within two weeks of delivery for the best results.
