Chafer Beetle Larvae and How to Manage Them
Chafer beetle larvae attack grass roots, slowing grass growth and causing yellow patches to appear. Much of the damage to lawns is caused by birds, foxes, and badgers digging into the grass in search of the larvae.
Identifying Chafer Grubs or Leatherjackets
Chafer grubs are white, C-shaped, with a distinct orange head and six legs. In contrast, leatherjackets are greyish-brown, worm-like, and legless.
Spotting Chafer Damage to Your Lawn
Chafer damage appears as yellow patches where the grass is easily pulled up with little to no root growth underneath. Birds and animals often dig up these areas while hunting for the grubs.
What Are Chafer Grubs?
Chafer grubs are the larval stage of chafer beetles. Adult beetles emerge from the lawn, lay eggs, and the resulting grubs feed on grass roots before burrowing deeper into the soil. The larvae remain dormant until spring when they surface as beetles to repeat the cycle. If left unchecked, the problem worsens with each generation.
Using Nematodes to Control Chafer Grubs
Nematodes are microscopic, beneficial worms that help reduce chafer grub populations. They enter the grubs through natural openings and release bacteria that kill the host within days.
When to Apply Chafer Nematodes
If you’ve discovered chafer grubs or had severe infestations previously, apply nematodes to moist lawns in April, May, or from August to early October. These are the periods when the young larvae are most active. Spring applications can help, but the best results are achieved between August and October.
How to Apply Chafer Nematodes
The nematodes come with full instructions and can be applied using a watering can or nematode applicator. Apply them to moist soil when temperatures are above 10ºC (50ºF) and keep the soil moist for at least two weeks after application. Nematodes can survive occasional frosts, so don’t worry if temperatures drop after applying them.
Coverage and Important Notes
Each pack treats up to 100 square metres of lawn. As nematodes are a live product, they come with a short expiry date (typically about two weeks). Please note that this product is non-returnable.
