Vine weevil larvae are one of the most damaging pests affecting container plants, ornamental borders, fruit crops and greenhouse collections. Because the larvae live beneath the soil surface and feed on plant roots, infestations often remain hidden until plants suddenly wilt or collapse.
Gardening Naturally Vine Weevil Nematodes provide a safe and effective biological solution for controlling vine weevil larvae in soil and compost. These beneficial nematodes actively search for larvae and stop them before they destroy plant roots.
What Are Vine Weevil Larvae?
Vine weevil larvae are the immature stage of the black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus). These creamy white, C-shaped grubs live in soil or compost where they feed on plant roots, crowns and tubers. Larvae typically grow to around 5–10 mm long and can quickly kill vulnerable plants if left untreated.
Damage Caused by Vine Weevil
Plants affected by vine weevil larvae may show:
- Wilting even when soil is moist
- Yellowing leaves or weak growth
- Plants collapsing suddenly
- Roots missing or severely damaged
Many popular garden plants are susceptible including strawberries, cyclamen, primulas, heucheras and fuchsias, particularly when grown in containers.
Natural Vine Weevil Control
Gardening Naturally Vine Weevil Nematodes contain Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, a beneficial microscopic organism used in biological pest control. Once applied to moist soil, the nematodes move through the root zone searching for vine weevil larvae.
After locating a host, they enter the pest and multiply, preventing further feeding and reducing the population.

How To Use
How To Use
Best applied when the larvae are active which is late spring and early autumn.
Apply to pots and open ground March - May and the second application would be between August - October. This is when the vine weevil larvae are present and the soil is above 12ºC. If applying under cover the pests life cycle is broken and our Vine Weevil Killer can be applied at any time, as long as the soil is above 12ºC . Apply directly to the soil around the roots which is where the larvae will be feeding.
The nematodes come complete with instructions and can be applied using a watering can or nematode applicator. You just apply to moist soil when the soil temperature is above 12ºC.

Our nematodes are manufactured in a different way to other nematodes.
The standard nematode is made from a gel formulation which requires more water and results in the overall size/mass of each pack being larger.
Our nematodes are naturally formulated which means the overall mass/size is smaller however the content of nematodes are still the same.
