What Vegetables Can I Grow In My Vegetable Cage, Garden Tunnel or Raised Bed?

There is a large variety of vegetables that you can grow in your garden during this season. If you have a Garden Cage, Garden Tunnel or raised bed, vegetables will be perfect to grow inside them. Vegetables come in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes, so you may like to start thinking about what type of vegetable you would like to grow. Carrots

Carrots are an extremely popular vegetable that be grown in any British garden. As well as being perfect for so many meals, they are packed with fibre, potassium, antioxidants and have even been linked with improving your eye health. You can start to prepare growing carrots any time between March-June. This depends on what variety of carrots that you are growing, the early or the late kind. Try to ensure that your soil is well moisturised; this will improve the growth of your carrots. A major benefit of growing carrots are that they are low maintenance, you only have to water them occasionally and their foliage should shade out most of the weeds in your garden.

Radishes

If you want to grow vegetables quickly, then radishes are the ones for you; they are ready just 4 weeks after you sow. Depending on the variety, they can be grown all year round. In the summertime, they are perfect to put in salads and they can also go with a variety of meat and fish such as beef and salmon, as well has providing your body with vitamin C. Radish seeds can be sown directly into the ground at about 1cm deep while spacing them every 2.5cm. The summer variety can be sown around March time, with the winter variety being able to be sown in July-August. Ensure that you water your radishes as frequently as possible so that the soil is moisturised.

Beetroot

Beetroot is easy to grow and is perfect for anyone who is looking to start growing. In order to achieve the best results, you should sow your beetroot little and often; harvesting the roots when they are around the size of a golf ball. From March time, you will be able to grow beetroot without any frost protection. Similar to radishes, beetroot can be grown all year round depending on what variety that you sow. They do not require too much maintenance, you have to water every 10 days when it is hot and sunny; try to ensure the soil is fertilised and moisturised then you can be assured of fresh and delicious beetroot all year round. Beetroots are great in salads, burgers or even juice! 

Salad Leaves

Salad leaves are usually eaten with a majority of meals and commonly bought in supermarkets…so why not try and grow your own? This mainly includes crops such as lettuce, but can include crops like spinach or rocket. You can begin sowing salad seeds in the middle of Spring while making sure that you cut at least 3 or 4 times throughout the season while continuing to sow frequently. This will ensure that you have salad leaves available to you for almost 2 whole seasons. Ensure that they are well watered and protected, it is common that these leaves will be eaten my pests, so garden netting will be important to cover up your crop. Salad leaves can accompany or can be used in many dishes and they supply a large range of nutritional benefits.

Potatoes

Potatoes are a brilliant vegetable to grow in your garden…mainly due to the variety of ways in which you can eat them! Whether you like them mashed, boiled, roasted or as chips, potatoes will go with many a meal, making them ideal for garden growing. You can begin to plant potatoes any time between March-April, this is so they are protected from any frost damage. When the weather is dry, it is important to keep them well watered, potatoes need the sun to grow properly. Try to also keep the soil well fertilised so you will have the best chance of growing your potatoes.
